Episode Transcription

Hey, everyone, this is Dr. TJ Ahn, welcome to pod cast Episode 27. Wow, I've been doing this podcast already 26 episodes, and thanks to your support. I just keep going. In this episode, we are going to talk about characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. So what is that characteristics of successful entrepreneurs? Well, you know, this podcast is focusing on private practice Physicians and Surgeons just like you all over the world. So you are essentially entrepreneurs. And most physicians and surgeons are a great technician in their expertise and knowledge. However, as you know, or you might have heard from other books eat myth. Most doctors are technicians, they have other aspect. They don't realize until they start their own practice. Does that make sense?

I know you can fix patients problems. But do you know how to run business? Do you know how to be a manager? Do you know how to run operations, you know how to handle staff. Do you know if you have that mindset of entrepreneurs. So, you know, people don't like to hear about mindset. But unfortunately, that is the most essential part of practicing your own if you want to be successful, or if you want to take the shortest pathway, minimizing your own trials and errors, sometimes jeopardizing whole finance and, you know, basically fail. My goal, you know, of educating doctors and consulting is to provide the shortest proven pathway, essentially, you know, Destiny is yours. And final results is all you However, what I can do is to provide that you know why people read books, right? You, you get that indirect experience, you don't have to necessarily be in that person, author, but indirectly you're learning what to do and what not to do. So that's my point of this podcast is to educate doctors out there, that I don't want you to go through the, you know, unnecessary failures is it makes sense I wish I had something like this type of podcast when I when I started in 2003. But anyways, so traits of entrepreneur or characteristics, before I go on, is that you think do you think that traits or characteristics is that generic? Or in other words, or do you have to be born with it? Or is there something you can acquire something that can be trained? My answer is both you need some generic makeups is not absolutely necessary. However, because I believe the power of human we can acquire skills. We can do anything you want, if you you decide if you put your desire to it and implement. But you know, like I said, if you have that genetic makeup for becoming a entrepreneur, you are naturally born with the gifted by your parents. Obviously, it would be easier, you know, that's why there are different levels of success in terms of the the the speed, how fast you get there, or how how, how you handle that, you know, entrepreneur journey, you know With us, like, less degree of stress, when things don't go, Well, you know, those, unfortunately, I mean, those are the better part of genetic makeup. So my answer is, yes, both the genetic makeup and also acquire, acquired or trained. Okay, so in this episode, I'm going to give you more 10,000 feet, bird's eye overview. And, you know, in the

following episodes, it might not be a sequential, but I'm going to go dive deeper on each character I believe it is. I believe that it's very important to become a successful entrepreneur. Okay. Um, little addition, little side to side notes. I don't know some of you guys know, I have, you know, many passion, right? I have a big passion in martial arts. You know, I've been training for a long time many years in Japanese Aikido, and Brazilian jujitsu. But I'm not going to talk about martial arts here. But not many people know that I was very seriously involved in dog training the protection dog or police dog training in that world is deep guys. So it's basically German Shepherds working below the line. And I was fortunate to meet a master level, world renowned working dog trainer. His name is Bill Kula. he happens to be in a rural area of Chicago. I made him around year 2000. And what I learned from him, so he's basically master of dog trade. And, you know, through about seven years of training, five, six different German Shepherds, I learned a lot about genetic makeups and that motivation or training, animal psychology, reward based. Those can be applied to actually people, you know, the human, you know, will motivate them and operate our our, our tasks much better based on motivation, and rewards, right? Anyways, during those training, I learned about genetic makeup, how the genetic drive that they're born with, the inner working bloodline is so important, because if your genetic makeup is kind of soft or weak, it's hard to train protection skills and obedience skills and scent tracking, I'm talking about still dog if they're not born with those makeups so they do puppy test, even puppies are born in the working bloodline strong pedigree. Still around five weeks, six weeks old, they start looking for those traits. If a few of B of the letter is much stronger in sense tracking, or if someone's more driving, someone has strong affinity to toys or food in all those makeups it comes very importantly, to send these puppies to the right owner. Okay, it's because it's all based on genetic makeup and when they become a young dog, and still green meaning untrained. If they they're if you assess and analyze their genetic makeup at the beginning properly, it's much easier for the owners and also the dogs. They enjoy the training because they're born with it. Does that make sense? So not everybody is meant in the same token not every body human now. Not every doctor is meant to be a entrepreneur, private practice owner. Does that make sense guys? So if you your realize your completely not that

you're not a type of entrepreneur surgeon that You might, you might have to look for the alternatives. If If you still love, you know, helping people, patients fixing problems, you might join the multi specialty rather than you know you're doing on your own, right. But again, my job and my passion is to help other doctors to become successful in their private practice journey. So I've trained many doctors who are not genetically made or own to do entrepreneur work through training and consulting, and consistent learning experience, they transformed their practice. So it's not what I'm what I'm saying is it's possible is, it's definitely possible for you to become entrepreneur, like success with huge profit margin, and then you know, you can have your own the lifestyle that you want to create Rome. You know, there's some factors that I cannot ignore that natural and genetic makeup versus training. So anyways, this kind of stuff is important is a good foundation, I almost talked like Chad, like, you know, just to kind of side note, but believe me, if you keep hearing this type of, you know, the talk, before you know it, you get in a good way, brainwashed and ingrain yourself to be ready for a great journey as entrepreneur. Okay, so I'm going to give you that 10,000 Square 10,000 feet. I love real estate. So I'm saying 10,000 square feet, oh my gosh, it's not 10,000 square feet, 10,000 feet. bird's eye view. Okay, makeup of So, characteristic or characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, you have to have a brain number one brain, meaning expertise and knowledge. Correct. You have to be that authority, you have to know what you're saying, you know, you have to know what you're doing. So if you if you're if you're not sure, if you're not sure at what you're doing, and obviously your patients see that you're not going to be successful. Make sense? You have to obtain the knowledge and expertise. Okay. But you number two, you have to have a heart. What I mean by heart is passion. That big reason why. If I asked you, if I stop you, hey, what is your big reason why you're your doctor? And then you hesitate? If you hesitate? Um, let me think about it. Let's see, let's see, why did I become a doctor? I'm sorry, you're not going to be a successful entrepreneur. Take your time tonight. After listening to this episode, when you have five minutes, deep thinking mode, trace back to your college days or younger days when you decide to become a doctor. And now I'm sure you maybe you you're just out of residency or you've been practicing for a while and then you might have forgotten your big reason why that's your heart. That's your passion. Okay, if your big reason why is not concrete, you're not sure why you became a doctor? Well, I'm saving you so much time, energy money in your career, you might rethink or change your career. Before it's too late. I don't want you to regret yourself 20 years later. Makes sense. So you have to have a brain and you have to have a heart. That's like foundation. Correct. Now I'm going to tell you those traits. I kind of create a list. It's seven of them. If I add more out, obviously I'll be

I'll be happy to add more because I'm not setting myself up in a rigid situation is Could it be dynamic. So hopefully you understand that. So number one trait of successful entrepreneur drive. You have to have that drive tenacity tenacity that intense focus you have that desirable goal and then you you have that drive to finish it you have that drive to complete. When I did Brazilian jujitsu I had again fortunate that's my gift God given gift is not I'm good at everything or anything like that. My my gift by God I know is that I always, for some reason meet the best teacher on every subject. I have not met any fake artist or fake teacher fake master for some reason. When it comes to minimally invasive surgery, I met the greatest mentor. When it comes to business. I met the greatest mentor when it comes to martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Japanese Aikido two great masters. Even dog training I told you earlier, I met the greatest dog trainer, the golf, I'm pretty good golfer, a avid golfer, why not? Because I'm talented, but I met the best golf teacher that that I that I believe. So. The my Brazilian jujitsu teacher used to call me Korean people, Korean people, not because I'm muscular. But we're talking about the traits that drive if I want to achieve something, I don't give up I have to that tenacity with the speed, you know, I I want to achieve that goal and then I make it happen. You know that drive the wanting to be successful. ambitious. You know that that's the drive number two niching down you to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to have the niche. I keep saying that. So this is hopefully not too new for you. Even in podiatry world, or any private practice world, you need to have special niche to be known for you cannot be successful with generic podiatry. Okay, so number one, drive number two niching down number three, resilience, resilience meaning not easily giving, you're not giving up. My son is seven years old. And he asked me the other day, what do you mean resilient? What does it mean? Well, you don't like the compared let's say, like a plants right? If you are so rigid tree, when lightning stocks or too crazy hurricane or wind that being too rigid, it may be broken down. So imagine yourself that I mean, I mean, I mean, visualize that tree can fall down because it's so rigid. But if it's like Claire's, maybe, like kind of think about long plants today ever break down? No. Because when wind blows it kind of bends themselves moving around. So being too rigid, right? You cannot be successful. You cannot handle the stress, or use meet. I mean endless roadblocks. But if you're not meeting those roadblocks and struggles as a part of our entrepreneurial journey with resilience, you will have too much stress. You cannot sleep at night when you're when you're having ups and downs. You need to be able to resilient resilience. Okay. Number four hardness. I kind of told you about that German Shepherd training. They usually assess if dog is hard, soft or hard. Okay. When they become young adults, sometimes we input

good blood working bloodline German Shepherd from Germany, Belgium, Czech or you know, other European countries, you know, with strong bloodline, and they come around 12 months old to like 20 month old still young and green, not train, but when we tested them, you know, we see their hardness and if they're soft, they're not going to be a good protection dog. Protection dog, by the way is not coming out of fear in Australia Protection dog with the hardened hardness, they're very confident, so they're not getting turned on to fake or friendly threat, does it make sense because they're so confident, they don't need to bite somebody, they don't need to get angry or scared or upset, because they're confident. And we could dog or soft dog, if we agitate them, you know, their tails go down, and their ears kind of tuck down, and they're scared, you know, they yawn, those are all the signs when you're nervous. And, you know, we can tell those physical symptoms. So those kind of dogs are more suited for senate tracking obedience, or therapy dogs. Does that make sense? So you know, like humans are saying, right, if you're soft by nature, you know, your fear, if you cannot handle the stress, obviously, it's very difficult for people like that to go through entrepreneurial journey, you cannot handle the stress of ups and downs. So you need to, you need to have that hardness, obviously, humans are great, because it can be trained, you can acquire the skills. So what are the hardness that you need? The how to handle the criticism. You know, if you're soft, it's very difficult to handle the criticism. You know, you meet mentors, coach, or like minded people, that who want to help you and give you constructive criticism. And if you cannot handle you take it the wrong way, and you take it personal and you get angry, and then you're like, Oh, my God, how can you? How dare you say that to me? You know, I know I'm good. Or I know that already. I mean, how would you say that, you know, I'm gonna I'd rather do it myself. Don't even tell me don't recruit. That type. It's soft. Okay? If you if you're hard. Mentally, some mental toughness, I'm talking about here. Mental Toughness, that hardness makes sense. And next execution executer or implemental. Some people are great in theories, I've met so many doctors like that. They're, they're like, expert, when I talk or, you know, when when we discuss something, man, they're the best in the world. However, where is the result? Okay, if you know that much, how much? How many, let's say minimally invasive surgery there. There are people out there in social media, claiming themselves that they're the expert. And then it's and you know, solution is very simple. All I need is just ask one question. Okay, how many have you done? Show me the result. They're not the implementers. They're theoretician. talker. Talk is cheap. Show me the result. How much have you actually implemented? How much have you actually executed? Without the procrastination? successful entrepreneurs, all of them are executed. Okay, and next trade. They always surround themselves with successful people. You cannot be successful on your own. You may but it may take a lot of time, energy and money. If you start surrounding yourself, sooner, the better with the with more successful than you. That's what you try. You'll always try to associate with people who are more successful than you. You know, the famous Jim Ron, quote, you are the average of five people you hang out the most.

You don't want to be the best one. When you hang out with other people. You want to go for hanging out with people who are better than you who are successful than you more successful than you. That's where you go for. And that's what the successful entrepreneurs do. And lastly, but not least, all of entrepreneurs that are successful that I know they invest in themselves. Invest in yourself. Never stop learning. Never stop investing in yourself. You will not talk about financial investment in like real estate stocks and options bitcoins, of course, those are the investment, financial terms, but how much have you invested in yourself, have you stopped investing in yourself because your excuses, you're too busy, you have children to take care of, you have business to run, you have a patience to see, you can create as many excuses as you want. But successful entrepreneurs, I know, they consistently invest in themselves, improving your skill set, improve your knowledge, invest investing in new coaching, investing mastermind, you know, again, this all connects, these are all multiple moving parts to become a successful entrepreneur. I'm not talking about just as a surgeon or physician as a technician, but all around successful business owner who's mentally physically healthy. Does it make sense? So hopefully, this podcast to give you a good overview of what you need to become a successful in your private practice, before you make money before you, you know, increase your profit margin and all that, obviously, without these traits, either born with or trained, it's hard to sustain, you know, your business operation without these characteristics and traits.
